Tarragona, from the Balcó to the Part Alta
from €0.99FreeThe Balcó del Mediterrani and Rambla Nova, the city's entry walk, free forever. On the way: Roman Tàrraco, the medieval Call, the fishing quarter of El Serrallo and the night walks of the Part Alta, joining this same group one microtour at a time.
La Rambla Nova and the Balcó del Mediterrani
Tarragona's postcard view: from Plaça Imperial Tàrraco you walk the whole Rambla Nova, past the Monument als Castellers, the 1915 Mercat Central and the Teatre Metropol decorated by a very young Jujol. It ends at the Balcó del Mediterrani, where tradition calls for touching the iron railing. Flat from start to finish, and free forever.
Roman Tàrraco: the Amphitheater, the Circus, and el Pretori
The anchor microtour and the reason Tarragona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the amphitheater's ellipse against the Mediterranean, the arena where Bishop Fructuós was burned alive, and the best-preserved Roman circus in the West, saved because the medieval city was built over its vaults. It ends on Rambla Vella, unknowingly walking the circus's starting line.
La Catedral, the Carrer Major, and the Call
The medieval heart of the Part Alta: you walk down the Civaderia and Carrer Major to Plaça de les Cols, with its 13th-century porxos and Rusiñol's fountains. From Pla de la Seu you see the Catedral's unfinished facade, then head down to the Call, the old Jewish quarter, ending at the Portal de Sant Antoni.
La Plaça de la Font, the Guilds, and the Walls
The Part Alta from within, reading the trades off the shop signs: Plaça de la Font over the old Roman circus arena, the escales dels Sedassos, the Trinquet Vell and Carrer Cavallers with Casa Castellarnau. It closes along the city walls, from the Portal del Roser to the Passeig Arqueològic.
Tarragona of Legend: A Night Walk
The same old town, at night, told through its legends: the bishop burned alive in the amphitheater, Carolina's ghost at Casa Castellarnau, the Catedral's pirate archbishop and the girl nobody ever found on Carrer de Santa Tecla. It shares stones with three other microtours, but here the story is the myth.
El Serrallo: the Fishermen's Quarter and Tarragona's Port Side
The neighborhood born from the sea that still smells of it: El Serrallo's fish market, boats and its own colles castelleres, home to three thousand residents. It then climbs to industrial Tarragona, past the lone factory chimney and la Tabacalera, under which more than two thousand paleo-Christian tombs turned up.
