What to see in Rupit on foot

Rupit gathers its stone houses and lanes at the foot of a great crag, and the rock gives the village its name: rupes, “rock”. The Riera de Rupit stream runs beside it, with its bridges, mills and a waterfall.

What to see

Castell de Rupit

The remains of the Romanesque fortress: a stone wall on the crag, documented in 1040. Houses stand in the way, so it is seen from the slope of Coll del Castell.

Pont Penjat

A suspension bridge of steel cables and planks, put up in 1945 by a group of villagers. No more than ten people may cross it at once.

Rupit, la vila de pedra

Where the village began: stone houses and tight lanes leaning on a great crag, the rupes that gave Rupit its name.

Masia el Soler, antic Palau Notarial

A 17th-century former notary's palace on Carrer del Palau, very close to Plaça Major. Its coat of arms carries the inscription SOLER 1608, the name of the family that held the notary's office for five centuries.

Carrer del Fossar

Over twenty stone houses in a row, built in the 17th and 18th centuries and faithfully restored. Their lintels show names, dates and even a pair of scissors.

Església de Sant Miquel de Rupit

A church of medieval origin, remodelled in Baroque style in the 18th century. Its dome is elliptical, and its eight-sided stone bell tower was not completed until 1869.

Capella de Santa Magdalena

A 17th-century hermitage on the far side of the stream, Romanesque in appearance and with a bell gable. Villagers rebuilt it in 1973 with money from a collection.

Molí d'en Marandes

A street whose name may refer either to a defence or to an eave. On it stands a mill on the stream founded in 1439, which changed its name three times and kept grinding until 1962.

Antic Fossar de Rupit

The village's old cemetery, in use until 1952. The Creu del Fossar, dated 1641, stands on its wall, and its entrance is what gives Carrer del Fossar its name.

Pont de Can Badaire

A footbridge with two shallow arches, below the village. It is recorded in 1570; the 1940 flood broke it and it was rebuilt in 1983.

Saltant del Molí del Rodor

A waterfall on the Riera de Rupit, also known as the Cascada del Rodó, next to the ruins of the mill it is named after.
