What to see in Peratallada on foot
The historic core of Peratallada is listed as a cultural asset of national interest, and its narrow, twisting streets keep almost the same shape they had centuries ago. Much of the village is carved out of sandstone: the moat was dug into the rock, and three rings of walls protected the town.
What to see
Castell de Peratallada
A castle recorded since 1065, with phases from the 10th to the 18th centuries, and the favourite residence of the Cruïlles family. It keeps a Romanesque keep and a Gothic palace, and is seen from the outside.
El fossat de Peratallada y el puente
A medieval moat some 200 metres long cut into the natural sandstone, reaching about 7 metres in depth. It shows how far the whole village is worked out of stone.
Nucli històric de Peratallada
A monumental ensemble protected as a cultural asset of national interest. The layout of its tight, winding streets has hardly changed over the centuries.
Plaça de les Voltes
A rectangular main square of medieval origin, with work from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It had arcades on its north and east sides; today only one side still has its arches.
Església de Sant Esteve de Peratallada
A two-nave Romanesque church from the 12th and 13th centuries, with later alterations, a portal of three archivolts and a bell gable. It stands outside the walled enclosure.
Muralles de Peratallada
A defensive system of three rings, built mainly in the 12th and 13th centuries. It splits the town into a main enclosure and two sections added to it.
Torre de les Hores
A wall tower from the 13th to 15th centuries, among the best preserved. It owes its name to the public clock installed on it in the 20th century.
Carrer de la Roca
A street next to the castle where bare rock shows at the foot of the houses, shaped to open up paths and build walls.
Plaça del Castell
A square facing the Cruïlles family's Gothic palace and the castle enclosure. It makes clear how the village is organised around the seat of power.
Carrer de Guillem de Peratallada
A street dedicated to the first documented member of the Peratallada lineage, who preceded the Cruïlles.
Plaça de l'Oli
A square looking onto the keep, the Romanesque part of the castle, and the Gothic palace of the Cruïlles.
Plaça dels Esquiladors
A very small square ringed by ivy-clad houses: a corner of everyday life in a village dominated by its castle.
