What to see in Pals on foot
In the El Pedró quarter, Pals keeps a protected ensemble of castle, town and walls, built in apricot-coloured sandstone on a hill that once looked out over marshland. The writer Josep Pla said Pals deserves not one visit but a hundred.
What to see
Torre de les Hores
A round tower that belonged to a castle recorded from 889 and pulled down in the 15th century. It is now the emblem of the town.
Plaça Major de Pals
The town hall square, with Gothic and Renaissance elements from the 16th century. It has a fountain and the coat of arms with the four bars, and the old town hall stands about twenty metres away.
Barri antic del Pedró
The old core of Pals, Gothic in character, with phases running from the 12th century to the present. Castle, town and walls make up a single protected ensemble here, raised in apricot-toned sandstone.
Carrer Major
A cobbled street that forms the spine of El Pedró. Its façades show round arches, stone balconies and pointed windows, and early medieval tombs cut into the rock were found at its upper end.
Església de Sant Pere de Pals
A church of Romanesque origin, from the 12th-13th centuries, rebuilt in the 15th century using stone taken from the castle after it was pulled down. Its façade combines Romanesque and Gothic, next to the Torre de les Hores.
Mirador d'en Josep Pla
A viewpoint dedicated to the writer Josep Pla, with the tower d'en Rom and a wayside boundary cross next to it. The view takes in the Empordà plain as far as the Medes Islands.
Muralles de Pals
A 14th-century wall that keeps six rectangular towers. Ramonet, Rom, Xixanel·lo and l'Hospital are the four that still carry a name.
Passeig Arqueològic
A walkway along the northern section of the wall, between the torre d'en Ramonet, at the north-west corner of the enclosure, and the torre d'en Rom, by the Josep Pla viewpoint.
Ca la Pruna
A fortified manor from the 15th and 16th centuries, with two towers, in late Gothic and vernacular style, built outside the town walls. It is now a cultural centre and houses the Museu d'Arqueologia Submarina.
Portal d'accés al carrer Major
An 18th-century archway into the main street of El Pedró, bearing a coat of arms and the date 1744. A walled-up Gothic arch in the wall may have belonged to an old market hall.
Carrer de l'Hospital
A plain street in the old town, close to the square and the Torre de les Hores. Number 22 is the former Casa de la Vila, from the Renaissance.
Casa Pi i Figueres
A historicist house from 1951 at numbers 14 and 16 on Carrer Major, built where the castle once stood. Lluís Bonet i Garí designed it for the surgeon Jaume Pi i Figueres.
